Book is a
loving history of and tribute to the Cass Scenic Railway Shay No 5
steam
locomotive
at
Cass, West Virginia
. Author Artie Barkley has been involved with Shay Locomotive #5 at Cass since 1965.
In the 1870s Ephraim Shay designed a geared steam engine to haul cut-down trees to his Michigan sawmill. Later model Shays were specifically designed to run on rough track with severe grades and extremely sharp curves. These Shays were admirably suited for mountain logging operations.
The stories he recounts in this book haven't been published before.
What a treat for
geared locomotive fans, logging modelers, and industrial archeologists!
A technical explanation of the Shay locomotive engine and drive train is included, as is a section on models of Shay locomotives.
