There were still many systems crisscrossing the states, from backwoods branch lines to the high density electrified territory of the New Haven, trains that operated with a variety of motive power. Both the New Have and the Boston & Maine experimented with several different paint schemes which added to the color of the era. The CN and CP also operated lines, adding to the diversity.
