Description
This is a set of Japanese Kutani tea cups with lids and saucers. The date is that last part of the 19th century, and made in the Kutani region of Japan.A covered cup is not the same thing as a pot-de-crème.
The porcelain is eggshell thin. You can see your fingers through the delicate cups.
The saucers are 5 ½” diameter, The cups are 3" diameter” by 2 1/4” tall. The lids about are 3”.
The shape of the cup is round with a dainty handle meeting the body of the cup in two places at the top and bottom. Beautiful red with green leaves on.
The silver trim around the edges of cups is worn away, but still visible. There are no chips, cracks or crazing on the cups and lids. There are some black ash kiln marks, tiny flecks of ash in the glaze on a few of the pieces, which is an indication of the age of the set. There are two tiny chips on the different saucers, one saucer has hair lines on the back. More pictures upon request.
The set is quite beautiful.
The set has a red overglaze Japanese language mark (九古-Kutani) on the underside of each saucer and cups
