This book brings together, for the first time, all information available on a remarkable locomotive - the 2-6-6-6 type. The information comes from a variety of sources, most of which are indicated in the text. We are especially indebted to those individuals who generously answered our queries and supplied us with photographs. C&O locomotive engineers Ross Ballard of Columbus, W. W. Adams (retired), Gary E. Huddleston, and W. A. "Bib" Sutton of Russell, as well as Road Foreman of Engines Burks Ball of Clifton Forge and J. C. Nelson (retired) of Huntington, gave us benefit of their firsthand experiences. Lloyd D. Lewis and J. C. Foose of the Chessie System made available test reports not otherwise, in the collection of that indefatigable English locomotive authority, 0. S. Nock of Bath. Tod Hanger of Alderson, West Virginia used his wide acquaintance with those familiar with C&O's Alleghany Subdivision to good advantage. Ray S. Curl of St. Louis introduced us to James Cunningham, also of St. Louis, who brought forth some remarkable and hitherto suppressed information about the Alleghenies. As chief engineer (retired) for Canadian Locomotive and as calculating engineer for Lima during construction of the first Alleghenies, Mr. Cunningham is a reliable source of information. He was, in fact, "tops in the industry" in preliminary planning and detail design and calculations.
For the co-authors, this book is the culmination of twelve years of close association as rail buffs, photographers, and historians. Gene's responsibility has been the text and many of the illustrations; Tom's has been the assembly of data from an impressive variety of sources. Over the years, Tom has been chiefly responsible for the Chesapeake and Ohio Historical Society becoming an authoritative focal point for studies connected with the road's history.
