Antique Japanese CUP & SAUCER / SATSUMA - Kinkozan, Warriors & Dragons (4D53)

Description

Very fine, unusual and incredibly beautiful Signed Antique Japanese Porcelain Satsuma Cup & Saucer depicting Warrior Heads and Dragons on both the Cup and Saucer under plate. The Heads are sometimes referred to as the Immortals. This is a high quality matching set that dates to circa: 1880, Meiji Period.
Both the Cup & Saucer are signed on their reverses with Kinkozan marks. (Kyoto prefecture / Kinkozan marks)
A large white bodied decorated Dragon with a black head that makes up the handle of the Cup.
The Dragon also depicted on the decorated Cup. The Dragon’s black head is particularly unusual; most of this type have white heads.
More Dragons are depicted on the under plate / saucer.
The hand painted designs and faces are nuanced with rich gold gilting and enamels on an off-white glaze; a fine network of crackle glaze particularly in the faces and slightly raised design / textures. All elements of the senses in this Cup & Saucer (minus the hot tea).
The combination of the black embellishments and the gold create an extraordinary presence and beauty.
The inside of the Cup’s bowl and underside of the Saucer are undecorated and are off-white in color.
The late 19th Century Japanese Cup & Saucer is in near mint condition and probably used for occasional ceremonial tea drinking.
Condition: One very small dark spec inside the Cup’s bowl near the handle that seems to be under the glaze / a hint of a ring stain inside of Cup’s bowl we tried gentle soap on a damp cloth to remove it but it did not clean off; we didn’t want to use anything abrasive) / some high textured spots worn off; noticed under high magnification.
Dimensions:
* Cup: approximately 3 1/2” diameter x 1 7/8” high / (4 1/2” to the end of the handle)
* Saucer: approximately 5 1/4” in diameter.
Both Cup and Saucer have good heft as well.
The antique Kyoto Satsuma signed Cup & Saucer shows very well in the photos and ever pretty and finer in person. Photographs were taken in natural lighting and with a camera flash. (4D53)
