    INTRODUCTION
How on earth, you ask, could a 16-mile two-foot gauge railroad up in Maine ever justify articles, books, studies, and general adulation particularly after the darn thing quit in 1941, nearly a half-century ago? Far from being able to answer this appropriate question, I can only point out that the Bridgton Narrow Gauge still lives, if you recognize that much of its equipment, some of it over 100 years old, operates today at Edaville near Cape Cod, that one can still hike over choice sections of the B. & S.R., and that dinner celebrations, no less, are being held in the Bridgton area by way of recall. The Bridgton Narrow Gauge, which smoked its was along pickerel ponds and past towering pines, was "cute" and human-sized, hut it was an amazingly busy and profitable entity until finally subdued by the powerful forces of industry decline and motor transport.
This volume started as a revision of my out-of-print "Busted and Still Running", but new stories and pictures kept interfering. Even so, this effusion on the Bridgton and Saco River Railroad Company (1880-193(1) will still leave ample 'attitude for future works on the Bridgton and Harrison Railway (1930-1941) and on the facilities and equipment as seen through drawings, letters and photographs yet to he shared by a growing multitude of admirers. While many of the illustrations and data stem from my own experience as an actual employee of the "B&H, valuable contributions were made directly and indirectly by a vast array of friends.
