The rare Jackson view at left -taken about 1880, of one of the first through trains in the Royal Gorge - might well have been titled "On the Route of the Chief", and Colorado railroad history (and today's transportation network) would have been quite different. For when the little D&RG consolidation No. 32 was posed at the head of its train of "duck-bill" coaches, the home-grown Baby Railroad had just squeaked through to a crucial victory over its wide-gauge opponent in what the Santa Fe referred to as "D&RG War No. 2".
Despite the warlike activity of the late seventies, the D&RG and Santa Fe had not always been enemies. The D&RG had originated as a north- south road; the AT&SF as a transcontinental. By 1872, the D&RG had progressed as far south as Pueblo, with a branch west to coal mines at Labran (just 8 miles short of Canon City); the Santa Fe, to the Colorado State line. Both roads were abruptly stopped in their progress by the panic of 1873, which dried up all sources of railroad construction funds.
