The MONON Railroad once played a significant part of freight and passenger rail service from Chicago, Illinois to Louisville, Kentucky. Purchased by the Louisville and Nashville and ultimately CSX Transportation, this 500 mile railroad spanned the entire length of the state of Indiana. The MONON was and is the only railroad that was fully contained and stretched from the northern border to the southern border of an entire state. The MONON, originally the Chicago, Indianapolis and Louisville Railway (C.I.&L.) was also the first class one railroad to be completely dieselized.
