    “The Green Mountain State”, Vermont, has all the ingredients to endear itself to railfans: mountainous terrain; rivers in steep valleys (many of which caused havoc for the railroads that ran in them); picturesque New England villages, structures and farms; shortlines; small locomotives; and short trains.
    Even the state’s “trunk lines” (Central Vermont, Rutland, and St. Johnsbury & Lake Champlain) were little more than small regionals.
    It is likely that Roy Campbell’s visit to Vermont and Maine in August 1939 to see his two passions, steam railroading and sailing, afflicted him with the “bug,” leading him to add Vermont photos to his collection.
    Enough photos exist for enthusiasts to explore and enjoy examples of the state’s steam railroads.
    This book is organized into five parts:
    * Central Vermont Railway
    * Rutland
    * StJ&LC
    * Vermont shortlines
    * Bonus coverage of the few New Hampshire and Main standard gauge shortlines
    Reviews:
    “If New England steam-era railroading is your cup of tea, then this book will interest you. It features 90 photographs from the Roy Campbell Collection...nicely lit shots that show plenty of detail...With most of the photos taken in the 1930s, GREEN MOUNTAIN STEAM provides a intriguing glimpse of what New England railroading was once like. The pictures are well reproduced and accompanied by informative captions. Modelers and railfans interested in the steam-era railroads in and around Vermont should find this book of interest. I did.”
