    INTRODUCTION
UNION PACIFIC'S first conception of the 4-8-4 was based on a 1929 Alco drawing that was proposed, but never built. The most remembered 4-8-4s were the 800 classes which were given FEF-1, 2 and 3 designations because the road did not want to call them "Northerns" due to the rivalry between UP and the NP. The FEF-1 was an Alco design. The FEF-2s were true UP designs under the direction of Otto Jabelman, Vice President of Research and Mechanical Standards.
The FEF-2 included many new UP theories from the 14-wheel tender down to new exhaust nozzle and drafting designs.
The FEF-3 was a virtual twin of the FEF-2, delivered during WWII under a government directive for western roads to purchase additional power.
After the war the FEFs were used on heavy passenger, and later, Nebraska freight work. With the cessation of steam in 1958, the 844 (last new steam locomotive built for the road) was put into fan trip service after a last-minute excursion request was authorized.
When the new diesel freight locomotive 844 came on line, the 844 number was changed to 8444 and retained for years. When diesel 844 was retired, the number again went back to 844. During this period the 844 was also repainted to the handsome (but difficult to maintain) two-tone gray and white color scheme. The 844 and 4-6-6-4 3985 are maintained in the historic steam shop in Cheyenne. The 844 has received heavy maintenance as required including a multi-year full shopping to bring the locomotive to long-term operational ability. In the summer of 2005, the 844 was again released from the shop and made break-in runs including a trip to LaSalle, Colorado.
