INTRODUCTION
I have had an interest in trains dating back to my childhood. I don't really know how this happened, except that at the time passenger trains were still going strong and electric trains were everywhere. They were in all the department stores and in almost every TV ad, especially around Christmas time. Growing up in Denver, Colorado, there was quite a lot to enjoy train-wise: Denver's Union Station, the Georgetown Loop, Caboose Hobbies, and Durango and Silverton, to name a few.
Like most boys that grew up in the 1950s, I had a Lionel train set with a figure-eight track plan. I wish I still had it. When I was about ten, a friend had an elaborate HO scale layout in his basement. This layout had a mixture of steam and diesel equipment as well as freight and passenger trains. This gave me the opportunity to experience model railroading at its best and kept my interest in trains going for a long time.
In time, I grew up, got married, and had a son of my own. We built a very simple HO layout when he was about four, but things got more serious when he reached 13. My son is now in his 30s and we still enjoy model trains, working on the 5000, and working toward the Santa Fe Locomotive Development Museum.
In 1984, we moved from Denver to Amarillo, Texas, and discovered the Madame Queen. I didn't realize how much meeting the Madame Queen would affect my life. This book is a culmination of knowledge that I have learned about this unique locomotive. I hope that it answers most of your questions and that you learn to appreciate her as well.
