Description
Originally envisioned as the first book in a series on the freight cars of the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie, this was the only volume published by author Jack Polaritz. The "Little Giant" hauled more revenue per ton-mile than any other railroad in the US during its zenith. Coal, steel, iron, coke, limestone and chemicals moved in continuous trainloads over the system. The steel and iron industry was paramount to the P&LE. Their extensive gondola fleet served the myriad of steel and iron furnaces and converters. These gons were also used in the interesting car float sevice inaugurated for Jones & Laughlin's exclusive use between mills in Aliquippa and Pittsburgh. This is a 96-page perfect-bound softcover. Printed on gloss paper. B&w images with a small color section. This book had been out-of-print for many years but a small quantity of new, shrinkwrapped copies were found by the author.Depot Square Publishing has been in the railroad book business since 1994. We publish our own books, produce books for other publishers, and sell other railroad publishers' titles.
