SECOND PICTORIAL SECTION
PROLOGUE
The great names in American railroading are becoming increasingly mortal as we move into final years of the twentieth century. Gone are such exalted titles as New York Central, Erie, Lackawanna, Jersey Central, Lehigh Valley, Reading and once proud Pennsylvania- bearer of that famous byline "Standard Railroad of the World" - which predominated as the second party in this dissertation. All left marks of achievement widely recorded in history. Less heralded are obscure short lines-some so unpublicized that knowledgeable followers in the field often discredited their recent existences.
Take the rural trackage which once linked communities of Pemberton and Hightstown. Accepted is the fact that its longest operator in period of years-the Union Transportation Co.-did close a steam era with the very last unit of a once abundant Pennsylvania Railroad fleet, additionally ending its use in workaday New Jersey service. Few appreciate that this line witnessed several important rail developments or that its first owner or succeeding operator profited exceedingly well over a 109-year span. In fact, technically terminated by the start-up of Consolidated Rail Corp. - "Conrail" - UT was the only New Jersey rail operator to exit the field with money in its corporate pocket. This was no accident, for the match of farmer-operator wits against the mighty in rail officialdom makes interesting reading.
One may become amazed or appalled at the extent of content extolling a mere 25-mile line. Once underway, so much pertinent material developed that the writer became hard-pressed to reduce size without losing supportive details. Original documents furnished by Mrs. Mary Meirs Wygant, great-granddaughter of a founder and by the Francis family who retained the operator's heritage, form its basis. Additional recoveries from newspapers, correspondence, other written or printed materials and the words of many gracious individuals helped bind this into a substantiated presentation.
Another valued asset has been a shared interest in the subject with Robert E. Farrell of Pemberton. Relatively new to the railroad field, (he was not yet photographing trains when the Pemberton "Zephyr" ran its last on April 25, 1969) Bob has nevertheless amassed a vast central and south Jersey collection using his own camera and by acquisition. Together we enjoyed many activities and "finds" in Pemberton and Hightstown country.
The writer takes a new approach to dispensing railroad history by alternating from board room decisions to happenings aboard the trains and in communities through which they ran. There will be action from pens of New Jersey celebrities, exhilerations of three opening occasions, the defenses and assertations of short line management and behind the scenes responses of leaders from three companies as they plot the destiny of this tiny enterprise. In short, few references remain unfounded to confirm a most unusual situation.
Having embraced the Tuckerton Railroad as the Garden State's most fascinating short line due to strategic location and exposure to the multitudes traversing its high - speed seashore route, the writer hopes you will mutually agree that this one was its most unique.
