New 3/21. This new book from Depot Square Publishing is the first of two planned books on the Pittsburgh & Lake Erie from its South Side terminal at the foot of the famed Smithfield Street bridge west to Esplen. The early City of Pittsburgh had the potential to be a major industrial center but for the freight discrimination imposed by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Every new rail outlet built to offer an alternative to the Pennsy was eventually taken over by that company. The only route left was a narrow corridor along the south bank of the Monongahela and Ohio rivers, threading through steel mills, lead works, glass factories, and other industries. The likes of William McCreery, John Dravo, James Bennett, Jacob Henrici and the Harmony Society, and others banded together to found and construct the P&LE. Built on four miles of trestle work through South Side--at times into the Monongahela River--to get to McKees Rocks, the P&LE eventually reached Youngstown, OH. With time, the P&LE increased to a 200-mile system hauling iron ore, steel, coal, coke, limestone, and oil. The "Little Giant" became part of the New York Central. This 322-page book opens with the story of the pivotal meeting that formed the railroad and moves through a spectacular view of the railroad, its facilities, motve power, rolling stock, the local industries, the company "villages," etc. against a backdrop of Mt. Washington and a myriad of steamboats that plied the adjacent waters. 373 b&w photographs, maps, engravings, and other ephemera. This is an oblong flat-backed hardcover with a spine-board stiffener. Printed on 80# Opus Gloss paper with an additional clear gloss film lamination applied to the cover. Factory shrinkwrapped. Limited press run.
