Description
This Qotom mini PC is a fully-functioning PC that can run any standard operating system like Windows or Linux, but with 6 network ports is intended to be used a firewall or similar type of network device. It is perfect for running pfsense. This particular unit has a Pentium G4560 CPU, which is similar in performance to a core i3-7100. It also has 4 Gb of RAM (16 Gb max) and a 256 Gb M.2 SSD. Besides the 6 network ports, connectivity consists of HDMI for video, two USB ports, and a power port for the external power brick. The factory heatsink/fan combo was a little noisy, so I installed a quieter one and drilled a few extra holes in the lid to aid in airflow with the larger fan.
I originally purchased this unit as I had a 1 gig internet connection that used PPPoE. The PPPoE implementation in BSD (and pfsense, which is based on BSD) has issues at higher traffic volumes due to being single-threaded. I can confirm the beefy CPU in this unit is able to push a solid 1 gig over PPPoE without issue. I no longer have to deal with the PPPoE issue, so I am able to go back to the smaller, fanless device I was using previously.
I just put on a clean installation of pfsense on it, so the unit is ready to go if that is your OS of choice. However, if you want to run something else, installation is just like any other standard PC, since it is just a small form-factor PC, with the slight oddity of having 6 network ports.
Retail price on this unit was 0 a little less than a year ago, without RAM or hard drive. I'm not looking to make a profit off of this sale just trying to get a few bucks back rather than send this off to the local computer recycling operation.
