This is a well done historical review of the New Haven's line from Hartford west across the bridge into Maybrook Yard in New York. This was once considered the gateway freight route into New England for the
Erie, DL&W, RDG, CNJ, LV, LHR, NYO&W
, etc. Other supporting area lines and branches are also included which together comprised the New Haven's former Central New England lines. The bridge is documented but there is simply so much more to the book than that one location.
Over the years, significant detailed written histories of the different railroads leading to the completion of the great
    Poughkeepsie Railroad Bridge
have been published by noted authors and railroad historians.
    I
n this publication, the authors have tried to tie all this together into a single,
    heavily illustrated book
that takes you along the way from the great yards at Maybrook, New York, across the Hudson to Connecticut's capitol city of Hartford and to the Cedar Hill Yards at New Haven.
A short narrative of significant historic subject matter precedes sections of the book that includes more than
    100 different station stops
    along the way.
In addition to construction views of the Poughkeepsie Bridge, coverage includes the New Haven’s entire west end operating area, the former Central New England lines and all stations between Hartford and Campbell Hall.
The authors have worked diligently to gather more than
    600 quality photographs
    (many in
    c
olor), maps, passes and timetables with each photograph having a descriptive caption to help tell the story.
A great amount of material has been graciously offered by friends and collectors who are avid railfans, railroad historical societies, local and state libraries, historical groups, photographers, newspaper and magazine archives, and online historic sites.
