The Sumpter Valley Railway, Oregon's erstwhile narrow gauge was built during the great days of lumber barons, when vast stands of virgin timber covered every slope, mountain and valley with towering splendor.
The motivating force behind the Sumpter Valley Railway was the cry Timber-r-r-r! The humming saws of mills were hungry for logs, digesting them as fat as little locomotives could shift from hillside to millpond, then hauling millions of board feet of finished lumber to the Union Pacific connection at Baker. Born with the Sumpter were an array of privately owned loggers like Oregon Lumber, Baker White Pine, Stoddard Lumber, W. H. Eccles and others. Each laid slim gauge rails into the woods and pulled out their log trains with Shays, Climaxes and Heislers. As huge stands of timber fell, thrifty loggers moved their tracks deeper into the Blue Mountains.
Timber was not the only asset of the Sumpter Valley. With the inauguration of train service into Sumpter, there came a gold bonanza. Though short lived, it enriched the treasury and added color to its history. Soon after the turn of the century, cattlemen discovered the lush grass along the Sumpter line and dispatched prime beef to Portland's packing houses.
The Sumpter Valley was unique in contemporary railroading due to its array of secondhand locomotives and rolling stock. Most famous were its two Mallets originally designed for the Uintah Railway and the only narrow gauge locomotives of their kind. Until the thirties most of Sumpter's locomotives still burned wood for fuel.
When there were no roads at all, the Sumpter Valley was populous with freight and passenger trains. The completion of highways and the decline of lumbering spelled slow abatement for this once prosperous railroad. Rails, Sagebrush and Pine is the complete story of this narrow gauge and the logging carriers. It's a book about people and places, locomotives and trains, and the good life and bad times of Oregon's most impressive railroad.
