PREFACE
From Chicago, the Santa Fe stretches over 2,000 miles to reach the West Coast. It is among the largest and most profitable railroads in the country. It is the only railroad that ran a scheduled freight train faster than any of its passenger trains. Although much has been written about Santa Fe's passenger fleet, very little has been written about its freight trains. This article is an attempt to fill that void. Fortunately the Santa Fe continues to make history, so this is not the final report. It is only a segment of history from 1968, thru the major revision of all freight train symbols to 1984.
There are several sections to this report. The first section describes the rules for assigning symbols under both the old and new systems.
The second section is a brief history of the changes to each symbol train from before the new system came into effect until 1983 or the train was discontinued. This section also includes the origin, destination, condensed schedule and service provided by each symbol train.
The third section is probably of greatest interest to the modeler. It describes some of the consists of several trains observed in 1968. Although most of the information was gathered from the western end of the system, many of the trains run from one end of the system to the other and trends can be applied to other parts of the system.
The fourth section describes the concept and incorporation of regular high frequency scheduling and how it revolutionized freight train operations system wide. Greater detail is given to its incorporation on lines in Texas and Oklahoma.
The fifth section covers trains operated between 1971 and 1983 not covered in the second or sixth sections. The sixth and seventh sections are probably of greatest interest to present day photographers and train watchers. Each train symbol operated in 1983 is described in detail and condensed schedules given for all scheduled trains including locals. If the train operated before the major change in 1971, a cross reference is provided to the Old Symbol Section. The seventh section is a region by region composite schedule of all thru trains.
