    Description

19th C Meiji Antique Imari Japanese Gosai Soba Choko Polychrome Noodle Dipping Cup
    DETAILS OF ITEM
This is an antique Japanese porcelain Imari Soba Choko that measures 2.63 inches high by 3.38 inches in diameter. It was hand painted with opposing images of stylized flowers. The interior and bottom of the cup was decorated in a blue and white Sometsuke. The rim of the cup is scalloped.
The soba choko was and still is a very popular cup used for noodle dipping in Japan. Typically used with cold buckwheat noodles, the soy sauce and dashi based sauce is poured into the cup after which the patron adds thinly sliced scallions and or wasabi paste to the mixture. The noodles are held with chopsticks and quickly dipped into the cup to be coated with the sauce then slurped down.
The condition is very good with loss to the gold rim from previous use (see photo). The base rim has a maker's flaw that was there when this piece was originally fired (see photo).  Its age is from 1880's to 1890 (mid Meiji era).
