The Pacific Extension of the Milwaukee Road has continued to fascinate many in the decades since the line vanished. Now comes a unique look at the Extension through the camera of John W. Barriger III, a rail executive respected for his far-sighted visions of the railroad industry, and authored by noted rail historian Thornton Waite.
John W. Barriger III, famed president of the Monon Route and photographer of the Pennsylvania Railroad, took many trips across the vast Pacific Northwest on the Milwaukee Road in the mid-1930s.
Working for the federal government in the 1930s, Barriger rode across the Extension while extensively photographing the infrastructure and motive power of the longest electrified rail line built in the United States.
Using Barriger’s images, Waite guides the reader on a historic trip along a now-lost piece of American engineering.
    The heavyweights
    Olympian & Columbian
and other named trains are on full display in this black & white photographic album, along with the sights and sounds of an early electrified freight railroad.
