Train Shed Cyclopedia #70 Gondolas & Hoppers 1943 Part 2
Train Shed Cyclopedia # 70 Gondolas & Hoppers (Part 2) from the 1943 Car Builders Cyclopedia -- 64 Full-Size Pages Reprinted from the Original Edition. Purpose of the Train Shed Series! At one time or another, almost any kind of rolling equipment can be found in the Train Shed at any major rail terminal. When searching for a name for an open-ended series of books about locomotives, rail and passenger cars, and other information of interest to rail fans and modelers, the concept of the Train Shed seemed to cover almost any topic we might present. Hence the title of this series. While the text and illustrations in the various issues will come from a variety of sources, they will have at least two things in common. One, each subject will be carefully selected for usefulness. Two, every page will be reproduced from an authentic, original railroad publication in the Newton K. Gregg collection or on loan from another collection. The original will be identified by publisher, date and author (if applicable). Selections of pages will be noted, as will any changes in size of reproduction from the original. Suggestions for other subjects are welcome: we aim to include in our Train Shed all subjects in large enough demand. By excerpting parts of the original books, instead of printing them in their entirety, we can maintain flexibility and variety, and reproduce valuable works for all to enjoy.

Articles:
Gondola Cars Built by ACF -- Equipment includes both standardized designs and special types
Wine Drop Door Locks for Hopper and Gondola Cars -- Absolutely tight doors - Easy operation. Wine door locks, whether applied to hopper cars or gondolas, are fundamentally the same in design. Doors are absolutely tight if the latch and the spreader extension are properly engaged.
Wine Drop-End Locks for Gondola Cars -- Safe, strong, and easy to operate - This device has the two-fold purpose of holding the drop-end secure in the upright position, while the interlocking feature provides a rigid corner construction, making it impossible for the sides of the cars to spread at the corner while loaded to the top with coal or stone.
Enterprise Equipment for Gondola Cars -- Several important groups of open top cars are classified as Gondolas. The cars referred to herein are limited to those having flat floors and therefore suitable for hauling many commodities.
Open Top Equipment Built by Pressed Steel Car -- Pioneer builder has complete facilities for design, construction, and repair - The service which open top cars must endure is perhaps the most severe encountered by any group of railroad rolling equipment except possibly dump cars and similar equipment used in maintenance of way jobs. Because of the character of the lading, a large proportion of which is coal, ore, cinders, stone, and iron and steel products the cars are subject to the roughest kind of treatment in loading and unloading.
Unitcast Structural Cast Steel Underframe -- Alternate for difficult fabrication - The UnitCast design for hopper cars suggests the substitution of steel castings for rolled steel parts. Cast steel is recommended at points of construction where weakness develops due to corrosion and / or where the use of cast steel can be justified by a saving in weight and/or by eliminating complicated fabrication and parts.
Wine Cast Steel Hopper Frame -- Provides absolute security against loss of finest lading - The Wine Cast Steel Hopper Frame provides a rigid, permanent construction entirely surrounding the hopper opening, forming a positive, non-distorting door fit.
Enterprise Equipment for Hopper Coal Cars -- Enterprise type D Door Operating Mechanism - The type D door operating mechanism provides an efficient door locking means and insures a close fitting door free from leakage even when car is loaded with coal dust or other fine materials. The mechanism forms safely and conveniently operated from one side of the car.
ACF Covered and Open Top Hopper Cars -- Covered types designed especially for bulk shipment of granular lading - Rugged, dependable open top equipment for economy in general service.
