The Terminal Railroad Historical Society of St. Louis produces a superb annual magazine with finely researched articles, usually centered around a main story, which are fully illustrated with color and b&w images, ephemera, track plans, diagrams, menus, and fold-out tip-ins. Issue 65, Summer 2005, presents a history of the Municipal/MacArthur Bridge which handled rail traffic over the Mississippi River. Opened in 1907, it was the largest double-deck truss bridge in the world and was intended to break the monopoly the TRRA held in controlling the other two rail bridges over the river at St.Louis. Known as the "Free Bridge" for its lack of tolls, it was renamed in 1942 for Gen. Douglas MacArthur. This 104-page softcover offers a history of the bridge and its fee structure, towers guarding either side of the river, the Southern Traction Co., the St. Louis & O'Fallon Railway, the Ralston Purina mill fire, and more. Printed on gloss paper. B&w and color. New shrinkwrapped copy.
