VINTAGE RARE ORIGINAL
TRENCH ART STYLE
ASHTRAY MADE FROM 1930'S GOODYEAR DURALUMIN AIRSHIP FRAME
I bought this at the family's estate auction. From my research, the Duralumin frame piece is probably from the USS Akron airship, either a scrap piece while the Akron was being built or a scrap piece from repairs made after an incident (crash) in 1932. This piece was made/owned by
Carl E. Lehman, an
employee of Goodyear Zeppelin Corporation (Aerospace/Aircraft/) from 1929 through 1966.
Apparently known to his colleagues as
"Mr. Airship Production", Mr. Lehman worked on and was chief production superintendent during the years the USS Akron (and USS Macon) airship was built and launched (see last picture below showing his engraved retirement lighter with the
Mr Airship
reference).
The frame piece measures approximately 8"x4"x5/8" and has a hammered copper center ashtray and 4 matching riveted cigarette holders along edges.
For provenance sake, t
he last 2 pictures show the Duralumin frame ashtray next to two other items owned by Mr Lehman, found at his same family's estate, and that are up for sale in separate auctions currently(they are
not included here)
; 2 lighters (already sold) including a zippo slim Goodyear Aircraft (dedicated to "Mr Airship Production") and a Case 1966 M-1 Astronaut knife. Again, the lighters and knife are not included in this auction and shown only for
authenticity &
provenance.
Selling as is. Thanks!
GREAT ITEM, GREAT COLLECTIBLE!
